How to choose the perfect mattress?
Check the base
When choosing a mattress first consider the type of base you intend to use with the mattress. It would be a good idea to double-check your own base for faults if you intend to use it.
Platform divan bases
should be checked to ensure that the base is nice and flat and has not sunk in any way (no need for a spirit level) and that there are no soft spots that are likely to sink under pressure.
Sprung edge and firm edge bases
should be inspected for sagging or soft spots by running your hand over the bed base lid with a modicum of pressure (these type of bases tend to have a long life but they do also make excellent trampolines and may have been used for that purpose by the kids or grandkids when your back was turned).
Slatted bases and sprung slatted bases - check that none of the slats have been broken or come loose and need to be refastened.
Please do check your base as this may be the reason for your old mattress becoming uncomfortable. We have seen on many occasions when installing a new mattress that the base is not providing the correct support and is in need of repair - when we've pointed it out to the customer they have sometimes thought we're trying to increase our sales. This is not the case at all: the point is that if you buy a mattress from our store, we want it to be as comfortable as possible for you, so that you will hopefully recommend us to friends and family. We'd like to avoid you ringing our store six months later complaining that your mattress has sunk to the same shape as the old one... which is what will happen if your base is faulty.
If you're on a very tight budget and you're a bit of a handyman, we would recommend a trip down to your local wood yard to obtain the materials to repair your bed base. As for metal beds, they are usually quite robust and generally don't fail that often. But if it has you'll either have to go to the local hardware store for nuts and bolts - or, for the more serious faults, a welding course at night school may be necessary to fix them! (please try not to burn the house down).
Once you know what type of base you are going to use and that it is in good order, you can now proceed with confidence in choosing your new mattress.
